Question: Starting a home business making cakes? (in australia)?

I have been making cakes for friends and family without profit for a few years now. Everyone tells me I should start a business. There is a good market for it through my children's kinder & playgroup and circles of friends. I also have some of my cakes on my facebook page which receive heaps of comments. So I'm jsut starting to look into how to start making it profitable. Obviously I would need an ABN, but where do I go from there? Do I need to be certified with food handling? Also, can I be sued if I replicate a licensed character on my cakes? Any other advice on getting started would be great, thanks :)

You will need to have your kitchen certified - a friend of mine started up a cupcake business and was required to modify her kitchen significantly (but she was renovating at the time so it only cost a little extra), The main issue is that your cake making area has to be able to be separated from your family cooking area. Think commercial kitchen - that on a smaller scale is what you will need. A health inspector will check the kitchen and certify it - and then you are allowed to sell your items. Yes you will be sued if you use any well known characters on your cakes.

You could get a website to promote yourself locally or worldwide.. You can go to my site and sign up for a website with a company name of your choice. Cost is $10 month.
